Understanding Fare Capping
Fare Capping ensures you never pay more than a daily or monthly limit when you use the Umo App or WisGo Card.
When you tap onboard the bus, the WisGo system deducts the fare from your app or card’s account. For each ride payment, a free 90-minute transfer period is provided to get you where you need to go. For further rides, WisGo stops charging once you’ve reached the daily or monthly cap. Once a cap is reached, all rides and transfers are free.
The image below shows the single ride fare payment and when fare capping works by fare type.

FAQs
What is WisGo?
WisGo, powered by UMO, is a convenient fare payment system coming soon for Valley Transit riders. With WisGo, riders can pay their fares easily using either a mobile app or a reloadable card.
What payment options are accepted on the WisGo system?
Payments can be made via the Umo Mobility App (using credit and debit cards, Apple Pay or Google Pay) or the WisGo card. Exact fare cash is also accepted, but it is not eligible for fare capping.
How does WisGo work?
WisGo uses validators installed on buses to process payments. Riders can tap their WisGo card or scan their mobile app when boarding. The system then deducts the fare automatically, so you don’t have to carry cash or exact change.
What are the new devices installed on Valley Transit buses next to the farebox?
The new devices being installed are WisGo validators. These devices will enable the new fare payment system and prepare transit vehicles for the upcoming launch. This is where your WisGo Card is tapped or Umo Mobility App is scanned.
When will WisGo officially go live?
The WisGo fare payment system will officially launch in the fall of 2025. Starting then, riders will be able to fully use the new payment methods for a faster and more convenient transit experience.
What is Fare Capping?
With fare capping, you’ll never pay more than the daily or monthly max. Once you reach the cap, all your rides and transfers are free for the rest of the day or calendar month.
- Adult regular fare: $4/day, $60/month
- Reduced fare: $2/day, $40/month*
- Youth fare: $1.50/day, $22/month*
*To be eligible, rider must be certified by Valley Transit
Is fare capping the same as a 30-Day Pass?
No, fare capping is not the same as a 30-Day Pass. With fare capping, your payments are tracked within a calendar month, resetting on the first day of each month. This differs from a 30-Day Pass, which provides unlimited rides for 30 days from the date of first use. Under fare capping, you never pay more than the maximum monthly fare, and you only pay for what you use within the calendar month. It’s a more flexible way to save!
With WisGo, do I still get a transfer after fare is paid with app or card?
Yes! You still have 90-minute transfers for free between routes when using the WisGo app or card. Tap the card or scan the app each time you board. After your first ride payment, additional rides within the 90-minute transfer period are free.
How will Valley Transit help riders get ready for the new WisGo system?
Throughout the summer, Valley Transit will be actively engaging with the community. Our team will be out and about, helping riders learn how the WisGo system works, transferring existing fares and assisting with setting up WisGo cards or downloading the app. We’re here to make sure everyone is ready to use the system with confidence!
How do I get started with WisGo?
Keep an eye on our website and social media channels for updates on how and when you can get started with WisGo! We’ll share everything you need to know to ensure a seamless and hassle-free transition. Stay tuned!
An agency buys my transportation for me. How do I use WisGo?
If an agency is providing you with a bus pass or ticket, the best first step is to reach out to them directly. Valley Transit is setting up agencies with the tools to provide their customers with fare under the WisGo System.
When do I need to make the switch to WisGo?
The WisGo system goes live on August 1, 2025. Current bus fares (paper 10-ride tickets, day passes and monthly passes) will no longer be accepted after December 31, 2025. Riders should plan to use all old paper tickets and passes first and then shift over to WisGo. There are two choices under WisGo, the Umo App or a WisGo Card.
App Users: The App is a full service fare payment solution for the rider. After the App is downloaded, simply add value from your credit card, debit card, Apple Pay or Google Pay. Once value is loaded, all you need to do is open the app, tap on “Show Code” and scan the code onboard. Click here for more information on the Umo App.
WisGo Card Users: To help with the switch, Valley Transit is offering free WisGo cards for riders that choose not to use the App during the months of August and September, 2025. On October 1, 2025, new WisGo cards will cost $2 and replacement cards will cost $5. Click here for more information on the WisGo Card.
Can I still pay with cash if I prefer?
Yes! Cash payments will still be accepted on buses. However, WisGo offers a more streamlined and faster payment option for riders who prefer contactless fare payment. *Effective January 1, 2o26, exact cash fare will be required each time you board a bus. The bus farebox will no longer print change cards, nor will it issue transfers.
Can I protect my fare balance?
Yes! Create an account at UmoPass.com. During sign up, make sure to use your email address. Once your account is set, your balance can be transferred to a new card. You can also use this website to add value to your card with digital payment.
